Two young area athletes with hemophilia will be heading to Texas as the New York City Hemophilia Chapter’s representatives at the Gettin’ in the Game Junior National Championship in baseball and golf presented by CSL Behring. NYCHC was invited to send two individuals with bleeding disorders between the ages of 7-18 to compete at the event which will take place September 21-23 in Fort Worth, TX. NYCHC conducted an essay contest to determine who would be sent. The winners were Adam Alvarez, age 12 of Staten Island and Samuel Eglow, age 15 of Milburn, NJ.

Adam, who will be competing in baseball, included information in his essay about “how important sports are for kids with hemophilia because exercise makes muscles stronger, which protects the joints.”

Samuel, who will be competing in golf, talked about taking up golf as a sports alternative after sustaining an injury playing soccer when he was younger.

Throughout the weekend, participants will have the opportunity to attend educational sessions to learn more about bleeding disorders and the importance of physical fitness and healthy lifestyles. Participants will also learn the fundamentals of golf and baseball, proper stretching techniques, and the importance of safety on and off the field.
