Hike Hemo is an overnight adventure to summit Giant Ledge in the Catskills. In addition to climbing to the peak, you will learn the fundamentals of camping such as tent-pitching, fire-building, and navigation all while building independence, preparedness, healthy risk-taking, and leadership.
This program includes 1 night of tent camping and a group climb of Giant Ledge. All participants will take charge of their own medical needs including prophylactic and on-demand treatments. This program for adults and young adults with bleeding disorders will focus on teamwork and independence, as well as bleeding disorder management in a high-adventure setting.
WHO: All bleeders ages 18+, who are knowledgeable and competent in managing their medical needs.WHAT: Climbing a mountain!WHEN: July 20th – 21st (Saturday – Sunday)* Raindate:  July 19th – 20th (Friday – Saturday)WHERE: Giant Ledge in the Catskills. Transportation will leave from and drop off in Manhattan.WHY: The views, the company, and the sweet sense of accomplishment after you just climbed a mountain.Space is extremely limited, so RSVP soon!
Additional Information:LOGISTICS: Transportation will depart from the NYCHC office on Saturday, 7/20 in midtown at 12:30 pm. Bus We will return on Sunday, 7/20 at approximately 6:00 pm *NOTE: Times subject to change – all participants will be notified in advance of any changes.MORE ABOUT THE HIKE: Giant Ledge is rated as a “moderate” hike and is a 6.7-mile round trip. You don’t need to be an Olympic athlete to enjoy the hike and complete it successfully, though you should understand that it may be challenging for some. Check with your HTC before participating.MEDICAL: A nurse and an EMT with bleeding disorders experience will be on the trip. We carry several well supplied first aid kits. Participants are responsible for supplying their own bleeding disorder treatment. This means enough factor to assure coverage for 2 days of moderate intensity activity, and extra emergency doses for a major injury.TRIP INCLUDES: Tents, food, transportation, most camping gear. Sleeping bag and sleeping pad are guaranteed if you RSVP by July 15th.
