Bleeding disorders among women may cause special challenges because of the bleeding associated with menstruation and childbirth. Menorrhagia is an abnormally heavy and prolonged menstrual period and is the most common symptom among females with a bleeding disorder. Other symptoms women with bleeding disorders may experience include:
- Frequent nose bleeds
- Prolonged bleeding from minor cuts
- Large bruises
- Easy bruising (unexplained bruising)
- Excessive bleeding with dental work or tooth extraction
- Post-partum bleeding (excessive bleeding after giving birth)
NYCHC held it’s first women’s event on June 24, 2017: a women’s dim sum brunch in Chinatown. We invited women from the NYC area with bleeding disorders, carriers, and caregivers. There we were able to develop a framework for the women’s committee.
On August 24-25, 2018, NYCHC will host it’s first Women and Girls Retreat at the Hilton Westchester. Programming will be designed to develop relationships between women in the bleeding disorder community and provide female specific and general information about various aspects of living with a bleeding disorder.
